This is a picture of a modem board that allows telephone access to the 'Net' etc. and was removed from a computer under repair.

Symptoms - No access to Internet. Unable to send or receive E-mails. Otherwise machine working O.K.

This Modem board was replaced and machine was back to normal.

Look closely at the picture. The modem board has presumably been hit by lightning and two chips are damaged beyond repair.

Only a very high voltage could have inflicted this type of damage.

It transpired later that the computer was being used during a lightning storm.

Surprising part is that the rest of the computer survived undamaged.

Luck of the draw I suppose.
